Whether you call it a hero, a grinder, a hoagie, a wedge, a sub or just delicious goodness (this is largely determined by where you live in the US), the only matter of importance is the experience you’ll have eating this sandwich. Originating in the Bronx, this ubiquitous bodega sandwich is made by chopping ground beef and then cooking it on the griddle with cheese, then folding it into a sub roll stuffed with lettuce, ketchup, mayo, etc. The result is a cross between a Whopper and a Burrito Supreme. And it’s 100% All-American.
- 1 – 2 tbsp canola or avocado oil
- 3 slices white cheddar cheese
- 6 oz ground beef
- Hero roll
- Ketchup, mustard, mayo or other condiments of your choice
- 4 oz shredded lettuce
- Salt & pepper
- Pour oil into a large skillet and place over medium heat.
- Add into the skillet the ground beef and cook for 5 min, being sure to spread it out in a single layer throughout the pan.
- Add the cheese in on top of the ground beef and let it steam together for about a minute. Remove from heat and place onto a cutting board.
- Using a kitchen knife (or for added authenticity, a spackling knife/blade), chop the beef and cheese together.
- Add the cheesy beef mixture into a hero roll. Top with your favorite condiments and the lettuce.
- Immediately wrap it in foil and serve. (It’s a wonderful present, believe us).
