The Sazerac

When we think about football, beer pretty much immediately comes to mind, yes. But we always suggest featuring a cocktail or two at your tailgate or homegate for those non-beer drinkers. This recipe is a classic New Orleans cocktail. Indeed it was the first and is the official cocktail of New Orleans. So if you're looking to capture the flavors of the Big Easy, this recipe's a sure-fire winner. Cheers!

Ingredients:

  • 1 teaspoon simple syrup

  • 1/4 cup rye whiskey

  • 1/4 teaspoon bitters

  • 1/4 teaspoon anise liqueur (or absinthe*)

  • Lemon rind twist

  • Ice cubes

 

FANGATING TIP:

Good absinthe should contain wormwood.

Directions:

  1. Chill a 3 1/2 oz cocktail glass.

  2. Pour the absinthe in the glass and swirl so it coats the insides of the glass.

  3. Pour out the remaining absinthe. (You can choose to leave the absinthe in; just know it will lend for a much more licorice-y flavored drink).

  4. Add in the simple syrup, bitters and whiskey/bourbon.

  5. Run the lemon rind around the rim of the glass and throw into the glass or use as garnish on the rim.

  6. Serve with or without ice cubes, to taste. (New Orleans cocktail experts suggest it's better without the ice).
