And some of you were just rooting for them because of all the retriever GIFs....
A History Making Night
By HF Correspondent Joe Blystone
When something happens that is so amazing that I am at a loss for words, usually the one word comment I have "WOOOOOWWWWW!" OK that is probably a way extended version of one word, but what 22-point underdog, Maryland-Baltimore County, did last night was just that in a win that was the first ever 16 seed -over -one since the field was expanded to 64 in 1985! "WOOOOOWWWW".
The Retrievers' Joe Sherburne said at that half, when it was 21-21, that UMBC didn't shoot very well and turned the ball over too much and were still tied, and all they had to do in the second half was make shots. Make shots they DID; 19-28 to be exact. And 58 percent from behind the arc. Special performances create special moments.
The only thing that wasn't special was the postgame reporter who asked the Cavs' Ty Jerome if he knew a 16 seed had never beaten a #1. "I think everyone is aware of that," Jerome answered. "Thanks for bringing that up again, but I was aware of it." I thought he handled a bonehead question that rubbed salt into a gaping wound very well.
As for UMBC? Their next quest will be against Kansas St. tomorrow. Are they supposed to win that one? No...but as they found out last night, some of the greatest things in life are doing things people say you can't do! Over and out!
